Description:
Born in Wales, he studied at the Swansea School of Arts and Crafts. In 1930, Glan worked as a political cartoonist in the Daily Express. He also provided cartoons for the Reynolds News, the Spectator, the Evening News and the House Magazine. The What’s On in London noted on his death that his friends will miss ‘his bullient conversation, which reflected his constant enthusiasm for old time socialism, rugby, football and all things Welsh. The cartoon reflects on the political settlement with which the Republic of Cyprus was established. The British, in the person of Governor Foot and Minister Amery, appear performing a balancing act between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, as represented by Makarios and Kücük. A wary Kücük warns the British against pushing Makarios too much; the latter sinking under the burden of political concessions made. The blocs of the settlement appear to be reducing Makarios’ stature to that of his Turkish Cypriot counterpart
