Description:
The Scottish artist Denis Frederic Neil Peploe came to Cyprus in 1951 after having been through a heavy attack of TB. Son of an artist, he developed his own style through structural design and rich surfaces. Often, Peploe combines landscape views with still life. The artist gives a complete picture of the Kyrenia harbour including both landmarks, the lighthouse and the church of Archangel Michael, divided by the blue waters. This is a modern depiction of a small fishing harbour that was much appreciated by all artists visiting Cyprus. The use of white for the church steeple alludes to the Greekness of the island (found much in depictions of Greek island buildings) while the yellow stone lighthouse alludes to the Frankish period of Cyprus when the most important edifices were built with such stone.
