Description:
The word rahat in Turkish means comfortable. It denotes an attitude of ease, comfort and inactiveness. The Turk, in his traditional costume, is seated on a chair, totally inactive, leaning against the wall. Adding to the general inertia of the scene is a dog sleeping on the ground next to him. The sitter’s face is relaxed, his eyes closed and his hands resting over his belly. Nothing seems to disturb him. The artist has successfully captured that very moment of relaxation. The identification of the state of rahat with a native Turk is expressive of the logic of Orientalism. The drawing also appears as a postcard
