Description:
Colonel Pain, a British military administrator in Cyprus in the 30’s, lived for some years in Kyrenia. He exhibited some of his work in local art exhibitions. The oil is of a village lane. The spatial arrangements allude to a nucleus village in which houses are densely concentrated and built on top of each other. Wooden beams extending from the roof, wooden doors of the traditional village style, a cobble street and an earthen oven create the setting. A woman appears in the middle of it hanging the washing within eyesight of a man staring from the doorstep. By concentrating mainly on shades of sour pink and grey, the artist achieves an overall atmospheric effect characteristic of a mountainous village. Despite the warm colours, a sense of cold mountainous air emanates from the picture
