Description:

The scene refers to the abdication of Caterina Cornaro from the throne of Cyprus. The queen dressed in black, and escorted by her ladies in waiting, is being received in Venice by the doge Agostino Barbarigo. Wearing the traditional head gear and dressed in lavish robes, the doge stands under a canopy and receives the outstretched hand of Caterina Cornaro. The scene seals the era of Caterina as queen of Cyprus. The painting is a rough draft, as is clear from the loose strokes and lack of detail
