Description:
The story of the tragic figure of the last Venetian queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, reappeared as an inspiration on the European art scene during a period of historic art revivalism. This coincided with the publication by continental writers during the second half of the 19th century of extensive historical and archeological accounts. Historians and artists resurrected episodes of gallantry and the intricacies of the Venetian court in Cyprus. Caterina Cornaro became the inspiration of many such artists who chose to depict the queen in various stages of her life as well as episodes from her court. This engraving presents the queen at a young age and in accordance with her reputation of having great beauty. She is dressed, however, in an attire not corresponding to that worn in Cyprus in the 15th century
