Description:
Esmonde-White is a South African artist who only briefly visited the island of Cyprus. Interested in the human figure and traditional appearances, she chose to depict the women of Cyprus. She juxtaposed this painting with other pieces of her work of the same theme in other countries. The Cypriot women wear colourful, but plain, attire. They are of a certain age and are presented as an active group. The head scarfs in white and black covering their heads, the high boots and the traditional clay water jugs create the impression of a female labour force as do the robust arms of the women. The artist skilfully dwells upon the gender implications of a no nonsense women’s group which appears remote to her and inward looking. Most of the women have their backs turned to the artist in an almost exclusive fashion. The artist’s preoccupation with gender issues seems to be inhibited by the specificity of the Cypriot cultural setting
