Kyrenia Gate, Nicosia.

Creator:

L.A.B.F.

Tarih:

1930

Description:

A romantic view of Kyrenia Gate, or Proveditore, after the proveditore Francesco Barbaro. The gate was one of three on the walls of Nicosia leading into the town and was positioned next to the Barbaro Bastion. It was repaired by the Turks in 1821. A square chamber was added above it and a large panel with verses from the Koran carved above the doorway. In 1932 the British cut the walls left and right of the gate to allow for two roads to lead traffic in and out of the city. Thus this watercolour was made before 1932
