Inscribed bottom left: NICOSIA. A TYPICAL STREET SCENE.
Description:
The sepia drawing focuses on the Venetian column in Serai square in Nicosia. The artist is standing in front of the administration and court buildings looking opposite where once stood a row of shops and houses. Today these have been replaced by modern office blocks. The Venetian column in the middle marks the centre of the town. During those years, the British chose to use it as point zero to demarcate distances all over the island. Cars do not appear yet whereas the use of carts drawn by animals and phaetons frequent the streets. The figures of a few locals populate the drawing while in the distance one can discern the two minarets of Ayia Sophia
