Sneak Peek: Neighbourhood in Kyrenia

This is a view of upper Kyrenia where most Turkish Cypriots lived. The figures of the hanoums in white robes and the architecture of the house on the right with the hayat attest to the neighbourhood.

At the far end, one can distinguish a water cistern, one of the many found in Cypriot towns. No view of the sea is possible as upper Kyrenia faced the opposite direction.

The painting is dated 1926 and shows how the last remnants of the turban are still to be found on the island. The man in the foreground is wearing a pair of blue pantaloons, a red sash around his waist, a white long-sleeved shirt with collar and a white turban. His clothing reflects the changing times in Cyprus whereby traditional and modern elements coexisted.
