What am I looking at: Players Cards

Players cigarettes used to contain small collectable cards within each box, which advertised various items or parts of the British Empire, the colonies. Two of these cards referred to Cyprus. A small explanation on the back of the mounted police officers writes: “Since added to the British Empire, Cyprus has enjoyed a measure of peace and security such as never before experienced. The native police are mounted and present a most picturesque appearance.” The second card, showing women weaving at the loom writes: “In Cyprus, spinning is still made by hand in the same primitive way it was made centuries ago. This is one of the few ancient customs that British influence has not superseded by the more improved methods practised in England.”

The condescending view in both cards reminds us of the British attitude of coming to the back of beyond to bring civilisation, justifying their presence on the island.
