The educational programme “The Last Queen of Cyprus” invites children to discover Catherine Cornaro and the history of Cyprus from a different perspective. Our starting point is the Museum’s collection of paintings, through which children will observe not only the queen and the central figures, but also all those who surround them and often go unnoticed.
Who are the people depicted in the paintings? What are they doing? How are they dressed? What can their movements, expressions and surroundings reveal to us? Through observation games and creative activities, children will be encouraged to “read” the paintings like young historians and discover the story of Catherine Cornaro through the eyes of the people who surrounded her.
The paintings thus become a window into another era, revealing moments from everyday life, the people, customs and society of Cyprus. Guided by observation and imagination, children will create their own stories about the figures “hidden” in the background and discover that, very often, the most fascinating stories can be found where we do not usually look.
