Printed in lower centre: Eine Schlangenbändigerin auf Cypern
Description:
This print bears the inscription ‘a snake charmer in Cyprus’. Most likely, it depicts a Gypsy girl. She appears exotic and heavily ornamented. She holds a snake in her left hand while she beats the drum with her right. The entire scene is orientalist in nature. The headdress, the viper and her Mediterranean looks allude to the image of Cleopatra. Especially the snake, conveys the mystique and the exoticism of the East, and reminds one that Cyprus was at one time was called Ophiussa, “the Abode of Snakes”
