Description:
This is one print from a folio of twenty six prints executed in the German expressionist style. They were created in 1949 by Jewish internees at the Karaolos deportation camp in Famagusta. Over fifty thousand Jews on their way to Israel were kept for some time in Cyprus by the British authorities between 1946-1949. Despite their meagre means, each one of twenty six internees printed one representation of their lives within the camp. All representations were circulated in twenty six copies, one for each of the artists. In this scene, a truck has arrived with potable water. People can be seen bringing their pots and other containers to the truck to be filled and brought back to their living areas. While a crowd has formed around the truck, it is not a scene of clamour or chaos. In the background children are playing ball with barbed-wire fencing rising above them
