Description:

After the premature death of James II, a power vacuum resulted in a coup in Cyprus requiring the intervention of Venice. This scene depicts Caterina's formal restoration to power after that event. Caterina Cornaro, wearing her crown and standing in an elevated position amongst a crowd of onlookers, receives a sceptre offered to her by Doge Pietro Mocenigo. The keys of her reign are visible on a tray held by a kneeling figure on the right. Dressed in gold is Caterina's brother, Giorgio Cornaro
