Description:

Ioanna Rheinfelder was born in Bucharest, Romania, but moved to Munich in 1970. She was a graphic designer who did woodblock work and wall painting, as well as musical and theatrical activities. The artist spent some time in Cyprus pre-1974 and was a friend of the Cypriot painter Adamantios Diamantis. She also had an interest in ethnography and, intrigued by the Cypriot culture and life, tried to adapt her work and her titles to reflect this. The woodprint depicts a Romanian woman shovelling bread into a traditional Cypriot earthen oven. Her Romanian identity is strongly marked by her headdress and costume. It is in fact the artist herself. She stands in front of a wooden house typical of lodgings in Romania which are not to be found anywhere in Cyprus. Semiotically, as the woman shovels bread into the oven, she appears mediating between the Romanian cultural space on the left and a quintessentially Cypriot one on the right. The latter is defined by such elements as the earthen oven, a clay water jug, a cactus plant and a board carrying bread
