Gwendolen Frere was the daughter of Judge Bertle Frere who arrived in 1897 and took up judicial duty in the British administration of Cyprus. She was an amateur artist who executed a series of watercolours of Nicosia and Kyrenia. The watercolour depicts the back of a horse mounted by a member of the Cyprus Pioneers. He is armed and covered with a long white headscarf to protect the back of his neck from the sun.
