During the British period of the island, on the occasion of a new regent’s coronation e.g. of Edward VII or Queen Elizabeth, commemorative mugs were distributed by the British to students in schools. This being one more effort to make the Cypriots loyal to Britain. During the EOKA struggle, within the movement of passive resistance, the students would gather in squares and break these mugs in protest towards the British occupation.
