This exhibition is organised as part of the celebrations for the 1600th anniversary of the founding of Venice. It is dedicated to the work of photographers, both Cypriots, and foreigners, who have produced images inspired by material traces of the Venetian rule in Cyprus throughout the ages.

The first part of the exhibition presents historical photographs drawn from CVAR's rich photographic archive, focusing on Nicosia. Among the most popular topics were the Venetian walls of Nicosia that caught the interest of many professional and amateur photographers dating to the 19th century and onwards. A number of postcards are now also part of CVAR's collections. Following the same concept, the exhibition covers images depicting the Venetian coat of arms in Nicosia, doorways, windows, sculptures, and other reminisces of Venice in Cyprus.

The exhibition's second part is dedicated to contemporary photographs showcasing how the island's Venetian monuments all over Cyprus still, nowadays, inspire professional and amateur photographers. The photographs presented in this section resulted from a photographic competition organized by CVAR in cooperation with the Cyprus Photographic Society and the Nicosia Municipality as part of the Venice celebrations.

Contemporary perceptions

Coat of arms in the Armenian Monastery Nicosia. The huge palatial building at the back of the church, largely in ruins , could have originally been part of the nunnery and later the mansion of the Syncliticos family. The structure of it is probably of the sixteenth century. In the eighteenth century the building was bought by the Armenian Melikian family but was abandoned in 1963.

The Venetian column at Sarail Square, Nicosia Originally the column was erected in honour of the reigning Doge Fransesco Donati in 1550. It also had a drinking trough but this fountain was not replaced in 1917 when the column was re-erected. After Nicosia was taken by the Ottomans, the sculpture of the Lion of St Mark that stood on top of the Venetian column was removed and replaced by the Ottoman insignia of the cannon ball. Today the column serves also as Point Zero, the actual centre of Nicosia, from where all distances around the island are measured.

The Constanza bastion held originally an orchard, but is now known as Bairaktar bastion because there, the first Ottoman who managed to climb the walls of Nicosia planted the Ottoman standard. His name is not known but some documents refer to him as Kara Mustafa.

Ruins of the third Lusignan Palace, Sarail Square Nicosia. At the left corner once stood the Serail, the Ottoman Governor’s palace, which was originally the third and last Lusignan palace, with the beautiful Catalan window above its entrance. In the early 20th century the building was in ruins. The British contemplated between restoring it, and demolishing it. They chose the second option and in its place built their administration offices and law courts, used as such today as well. At the corner stand the coat of arms of England and that is where the British Governor would appear and read out his proclamations. The writer Mallock who visited in 1887 describes the old serial in his book An Enchanted Island: “ Another of the sights of Nicosia was a ruinous pile of buildings, which now is called the Konak, that is to say, the Turkish Government offices, but which was once the palace of the kings of the House of the Lusignan. Its principal entrance opened on a large irregular place and the external view of it was not impressive or interesting. It consisted simply of a long blind wall, parched with mud and ragged at the top, in the middle of which was a tower with a Gothic doorway. The dilapidated doors were not fastened and Colonel Falkland unceremoniously pushed them open. Inside was a guard room with heavy groined roof, beyond this was another and then came a long court, surrounded by climbing buildings that had been used by the Turks as barracks…As I was turning to leave, over the door was a magnificent coat of arms –that of the Lusignan - surmounted by a crown and a helmet. And over this, was a window which, the moment I set eyes on it, gave to the whole scene a new soul and sentiment. The lower part was defaced, battered and broken, choked with bricks and ragged Venetian shutters, but its upper part was as perfect as in the days of its glory – a great Gothic arch filled with exquisite tracery.

Famagusta Gate in Nicosia, black and white photograph of Famagusta Gate in Nicosia. Famagusta Gate, or Porta Giuliana named so in honour of Giuliano Savorgnano, the Venetian engineer, built in 1567, is one of the three gates of Nicosia. Designed by Venetian engineer Michael Sammicheli, it bears three defaced coat of arms probably those of the contributors to the work. Originally it had a triangular roof but in 1821 the Ottomans added a semi- circular roof in front with the turgha (signature) of Sultan Mahmut II. The wooden main door is as old as the building. There is a main corridor leading in and out of the city and two more, smaller corridors, used as custom offices, left and right. The gate would open at sunrise and close at sunset. Today, Famagusta Gate is a cultural Centre.

It was from Podocataro bastion that the Ottomans entered the city and moved towards Costanzo bastion where they desecrated the Cypriot defenders. This area was purported to be the Greek neighbourhood of the city.

According to Abbe Giovanni Mariti, who visited Cyprus in 1769, if you approach the city from the southern side of the island you enter it by Julian, now called Famagusta gate. “Of the three gates which break the circuit of the walls this is the finest in plan and execution. A few years since one could not enter the city on horseback; now Europeans may do so, but Greek Christians must either alight or pay some small coin to the guard on duty. Within, on the side walls, there are some coats of arms; among them I saw one with a cross, a rare thing in countries conquered by the Turks, who have everywhere effaced this sign. As you walk around the ramparts you see many pieces of artillery bearing the arms of Venice.

The Walls of Nicosia. Strong walls defined the periphery of the city but these were shortened by the Venetians in 1568 from 9 almost to 3 miles, in view of an Ottoman attack. Whatever remained outside these walls was raised to the ground so as to be able to see the advancing enemies. According to medieval travellers, 80 churches and monasteries numerous civic buildings, 1800 houses and the Lusignan Palace were then destroyed. The walls were built by Venetian engineer Giuliano Savorgnano, a project he never managed to fully complete and below is a moat which never held water but always remained dry. The refortification project required 5-6.000 workers and the river was diverted in order to flow in the new moat surrounding the city, but never did. The new circular fortress with eleven bastions was constructed. The illustrious and rich families of Nicosia were put in charge of construction and workers in the respective bastions, and the misery of the masses facilitated their recruitment in the project being assured of an income.

Pedhieos River, Nicosia The traveler Felix Faber (1483) described the Pedhieos river as a large torrent running through the midst of the city which at certain seasons rushes down in a mighty stream. The river caused many devastating floods to Nicosia. In 1567, during the reconstruction of the walls, the Venetians deemed it necessary to divert the course of the river outside the city. It might be that Savorgnano meant to have the water of the river in the moat but this never happened. From thereon, the waters of the river entered the town only through aqueducts and the inhabitants depended on “Persian Wheels” for their supply of water.

Granite column at Serail square, Nicosia. Serail square was also known as Konak square and was dominated by the Venetian column, symbol of the Serenissima. This column can be found in many of the Venetian colonies, bearing on top the Lion of St Mark. The column was taken down by the Turks and kept in the Serail courtyard but was re-erected in 1917. It is a monolith of grey granite from Salamis. On the top step which supports the column is the following inscription: Fides incorrupta non pulchritude non hujus ubertas specetur incolar. Around it are the coat of arms of famous Venetian families: Donato, Contarine, Passaro, Michiel and Querine.

The Kyrenia Gate is still embedded within the walls of Nicosia and Horoz Ali stands in front of the Gate. A guard’s chamber was added above the building and an inscription reads “Muhammad, spread the good news: help to those who believe will come from God, and in a short time will come a victory. You, who are capable of opening every door, open for us too an auspicious door.”

Foscolo As the Reverend Edward Daniel Clarke approached Nicosia in 1801 he had the surprise of his life… “As we rode into the town, we met a long train of women, dressed in white robes, the beautiful costume of the capital, filling the air with their lamentations. Some of these were of the middle age, but all were handsome; as they came on, they exposed their faces and breasts to public view, tearing their hair and weeping piteously. In the midst of the procession rode a Turk upon an ass, smoking his pipe in the most tranquil manner and wholly indifferent to the cries. Upon enquiring the cause of this tumult, we were told that these women were all prostitutes, whom the Governor had banished the city and whom they were therefore conducting beyond the gates. Their dress was modeled after a very ancient form and highly elegant; it consisted entirely of fine white linen, so disposed as to veil at once the whole figure, unless when purposely cast aside; and it fell to the ground in long graceful folds.”

Enlart The church of Tripiotis is decorated with architectural scraps of different styles and varying merits which have either replaced an important Gothic church or have been first reconstructed at the same time when the Venetians were demolishing the suburbs of Nicosia and the churches within them, around 1567. In which case the date 1690, found near the southern door, must refer to the restoration of this church. According to Camille Enlart, the most interesting details are to be found on the outside of the church. “The southern door has a lintel supported by two segments of frieze projecting like corbels, which is richly carved overall in a late Romanesque style. On the lintel is carved the upper part of a human figure emerging from two scrolls of vine leaves which he grasps with his hands. At each side is a lion passant, affronted. The friezes are carved on the edge with human figurines and on the front with birds, one lion-headed, the other human-headed, whose tails are elongated into scrolls of leaves, some lobed in side view, others spread out in frontal view in the shape of fleurons or palmettes.”

Old Ruins of the third Lusignan Palace, Sarail Square, Nicosia. In the old Imbrahim Pasha Quarter stood the Palazzo del Governo but in 1904 this was demolished by the British administration. A block of Government Offices was built by the Public Works Department including the Law Offices, Land Registry, Forest, Customs and Commissioners Offices. Much of the medieval sculpture was removed to the Bedestan. In this building tragic events took place: the butchery of the Venetian governor and Cypriot notables in 1570, when the Ottomans took over Nicosia. The trial and execution of the Archbishop and bishops in 1821; Then during the British period gallows were erected for executions.

Keshishian John Locke, in 1553, travelled to Nicosia and described the capital as follows: There dwell all the Gentilitie of the Island, and there hath every Cavallier or Conte in the Island a habitation. There is in this citie one fountaine rented by St Marke, which is bound every eight days once, to water all the gardens in the towne, and the keeper of this fountaine hath for every tree a Bizantin, which is twelve soldes Venice, and sixpence sterling. The streets of the citie are not paved, which market it with the quantitie of the gardens, to seem but a rurall habitation. But there be many faire buildings in the Citie, there be also monasteries both of Franks and Greeks. In 1738 another traveler, Richard Pococke, wrote: “The walls of the antient city which were built with semicircular towers, may be traced all around and they seem not to have been much less than four miles in compass. There are still remaining in the city several magnificent houses, which are of the times of the Kings of Cyprus. Some of them have been repaired by the Venetians, according to the rules of modern architecture.”

The church of the Holy Cross near Paphos Gate. In 1244, the Franciscans established their first monastery in Nicosia, west of Paphos Gate, possibly with the help of Alice of Montbeliard. After many turbulent events the monastery continued to flourish and in 1374 it was called a stadium generale, i.e. a university. With the Ottoman invasion the Franciscans along with other orders fled the island. But, they returned in 1592 and established themselves on the same spot where they once were and still are. In 1642 the first church was built dedicated to the Holy Cross which functioned till the end of the nineteenth century. In April 1900 a new church, financially supported by the Spanish Royal family and the Franciscan friars of the Holy Land began to be built and was inaugurated in 1902. By 1959 it acquired a friary. The Catholic church of the Holy cross has been situated in the same place over seven centuries.

By Camile Enlart The traveler Richard Pococke arrived in Nicosia in 1738: “There is a most beautiful Corinthian door-case of a house, which they say, belonged to the Venetian General.” Camille Enlart, notes that “it has a marble plaque above it bearing a cross and the date 1738. It is not impossible it could be of that date. Nevertheless, it presents two pointed arches frames by a hoodmould with torus and fillet supported on well designed Gothic brackets that one would be tempted to date to the fourteenth or fifteenth century.”

Catalan Window in the Lapidary Museum, Nicosia. An ancient house now called the Lapidary museum, was the house of George Jeffery, the first director of Antiquities during the British period. In it Jeffery collected architectural artefacts from all over Nicosia including the famous Catalan window which stood above the entrance of the Serail (Governor’s Palace) as well as the famous Ibelin sarcophagus from the cathedral.

Kyrenia Gate, Nicosia. ca. 1930 The third and smallest gate of Nicosia, Kyrenia Gate. The British cut the walls on either side and made entrances to the old city, leaving the gate in the middle of the street. Small and compact, the top rounded part was added by the Ottomans and used as a prison. Left high up in medieval times was the women’s slave bazaar which was replaced in the 20th century by the mules’ bazaar. On Barbaro bastion once stood a number of English guns brought over by Sir Sidney Smith during the reign of George III, in order to defend Acre against Napoleon. Then these fell in the hands of the Turks who brought them over to Cyprus and neglected to remove them when the British took over the island.

Nicosia. Door of a house. French verso "Porte de maison", by Camille Enlart. This is the magnificent House of the Dragoman Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios. Dragoman means interpreter but this position in Cyprus referred to the mediator between the people and the Porte who acted as the tax collector along with the Church. Hadjigeorgakis is the most famous dragoman of Cyprus because, being accused of embezzling taxes, he was decapitated by the Ottomans. The building’s architecture is a mixture of Venetian and Ottoman elements. Built with Cypriot sandstone, it has a carved Venetian entrance with a Venetian coat of arms on top and a çumbe, a kiosk, typical of Ottoman architecture. The coat of arms is of the Podocatharo family of Greek origins, and presents a double headed eagle with a cross on its chest. Above it is the winged lion of St Mark, with an open book. When the book is open, it is time of peace, when closed with the lion’s paw on it, it is time of war. The inscription in the book reads “Pax tibi Marce Evangelista meus”, “May peace be with you, Mark, my evangelist”. Below is a row of pomegranates, symbolising fertility and prosperity. Further below some vegetal designs which do not belong to the original coat of arms but come from an ancient carving and were used to enhance the decoration.

Black and white photograph of workers rebuilding the Venetian Wall curtain between Constanza bastion and Podocatoro bastion George Jeffery in his 'Historic Monuments of Cyprus', 1918, writes that the rampart, as designed by Giulio Savorgnano, consisted of earth, with a facing of stone half way up its height, forming a retaining wall for the lower portion. Above this retaining wall the scarped face of the earthwork was intended to form a grassy slope, as in more modern fortifications- this is especially mentioned in Savorgnano’s letters to the Duke of Parma. After the siege of 1570, the Turks, in repairing or completing the work, added a stone facing to the scarp in the style of the great sixteenth century fortifications at Aleppo and Jerusalem. At present nothing remains of the elaborate scheme for the “cunetta”, or wet ditch, the countermining galleries etc described in the letters of Savorgnano. The great ditch is now much filled up and even the earthwork is beginning to assume the appearance of mere irregular mounts.

Foscolo Here, right by Famagusta Gate, an entrance to the city, up until the early 20th century, gathered the lepers of Nicosia and begged for food. In the early British period, 1878-1900, the soldiers would lower by ropes baskets with bread and water for these poor creatures, until finally the British built a leper farm outside Nicosia for them.

Walking on the wall between the Rochas and Mula bastions or on the opposite side, you might remember that it is in the moat below that James the Bastard, last Lusignan King of Cyprus, furious with his sister Charlotte, gathered his most loyal followers, then led them to Larnaca and from there on to Egypt. He raised an army of Mamelukes and came back to oust his sister from the island and gain the throne. Walking on the wall you can imagine medieval knights mounted on colourful dressed horses competing at spear fighting in the moat, while the crowds cheer the winners. Much later, visualise the British Governor of Cyprus with his entourage watching the gymkhana and the police parades in the moat, repeated three times a year. All of these within the expanse of Savorgnano’s cunetta.

Kyrenia Gate, Nicosia. Kyrenia Gate, between Querini and Barbaro bastions. The Provveditore, or military governor, just before the Ottoman attack was Barbaro. Thus, the bastion on the right of the Gate facing it from inside the walls was named after him. Later the Gate was renamed Porta Bembo, after Barbaro’s successor. In 1821, the Turks repaired the Gate and added an upper chamber to be used as a guard room. A marble panel was inserted with a “surah”, a verse from the Koran. During the Colonial period the marble panel was taken out and on the reverse side another inscription was revealed recording the Venetian building of the walls and the gate. The monogram of Mahmut II also appears above the inner gate. Also, the monogram GvR 1931 which marks the date the gate was closed for the roadworks left and right. By 1935 the gate was separated from the walls and two roads leading in and out of the city were created by the British. Horoz Ali (Ali the Cock), the door keeper of the Gate, died there in 1946 at the age of 121.

Paphos Gate, also known as St Dominico Gate, during medieval times joined the famous Dominican monastery and the palace with the walled city. By the end of the nineteenth century there was nothing outside Paphos Gate except for a primitive tannery. In 1880, Captain Andrew Scott-Stevenson and his wife Esme, upon trying to depart from Nicosia one evening, realised that they were too late and Paphos Gate had closed, as did all Gates at night. Ms Esme Scott-Stevenson describes the scene: “ My husband hammered and kicked until, I regret to say, the varnish came off his boots, and shouted till he was hoarse, - all to no purpose. At length he took to shying stones at the only speck of light in the mass of masonry before us, presumably a window, for it was too dark to distinguish anything. These had the desired effect. A few words of Turkish were heard. My husband called in reply, “Gate-open-friend-English”, whilst continuing to shy the largest stones he could find. The woodwork was moved a few inches, when, quick as lightening, my husband shoved against it with all his strength, and the gate flew back. But as we had been kept outside for nearly an hour, we were too ruffled even to vouchsafe a “goodnight” to the half awakened guard. Later, the British blocked up Paphos Gate and instead made a new cut through the walls next to the old Gate. The Ottoman military barracks a few meters from the Gate, during the colonial period, were turned into Police barracks. These remained and functioned as such all through to the early twenty first century. The Gate was restored a few years ago and some medieval architectural relics were revealed.

It is said that Lord Hay came in followed by two mules carrying baskets of coins which were thrown to the crowds to gain their acceptance and approval. Hepworth Dixon describes the event: “At three, the Admiral mounted and set out. His mules, gaily attired. Rode in front of him groaning under their weight of silver coin. To right and left the news ran out among the crowds, that this great English lord, sent to them by the noble Queen, was going to pay off all arrears of debt. Everyone was to get his own, from zaptieh to cadi, from caimacan to pasha, everyone was invited to send in his bill. All that was owing would be paid: not in the dirty caimes of the country but in solid English sixpences. Such news were strange enough to take men’s breath. A governor bringing in money to their town! The Golden Age had come again.” The Gate was called Channel Squadron Gate but this name was soon forgotten. It was also known as Porta di Sotto (the Lower Gate) and by the Turks Taht el kaleh (the lower fort). Soon new barracks were built on top of Famagusta Gate for the guards.

Interior of the Famagusta Gate, ca. 1856 The Porta Caraffa through which only the Cypriot infantry exited during their “surprise” and failed attack against the Ottomans, is in fact Porta Giulia, named after Giulio Savorngano, or the Famagusta Gate of today. When built by the Venetians in 1567, it followed the design of the famous Lazaretto Gate of Candia (Crete). It is a vaulted passage through the rampart with a spherical dome eleven meters in diameter, and is lit by a circular opening in the centre of the dome. There is also a disused fountain within it. On each side of the passage there is a long chamber, used as custom offices. The inner façade of the gate is imposing. Originally it had a triangular roof but when the Ottomans took Cyprus, they added a semi spherical part which holds the turga (the signature) of Mahmut II. Left and right of the entrance are coat of arms of the engineers and designer of the gate. The wooden door, with which the gateway was opened and closed, are of the Venetian period. Two small openings exist left and right of the main entrance. Lady Brassey in 1878 arriving to Nicosia found the Gate shut as it was night. She notes in her diary: “after shouting and hammering on our part, an old Turk made his appearance, with a lantern and the keys to admit us. The walls of the city are high, thick and machicolated, with many Venetian cannons lying about outside. In the bright moonlight the effect was very fine.” In the words of Ali Bey who visited Nicosia in March 1806 “The situation of the city on an elevation of some feet in the middle of a wide plain, allows it to enjoy pure air and a fine view. The enclosing walls are scarped with a revetment of cut stone, and broken by salient and re-entering angles, so that it is capable of a rectangular defence and wears an imposing appearance. It has three Gates, called Paphos, Chirigna and Famagosta. The last is magnificent; it is composed of a vast cylindrical vault which covers all the ramp or ascent from the lower level of the plain to the higher to which the city is built. Half way up the slope is a flattened dome or segment of a sphere, in the middle of which is a round skylight. This monumental work, built as it is of huge cut stones or coarse mar, is worthy of the old inhabitants.”
