Sneak Peek: Snake Island

Joseph Vermeiren was a geologist from Belgium married to the Greek Cypriot Agni Markides. He came to Cyprus to work at the copper mines, and he was an amateur artist. He held several of his own exhibitions on the island and participated in many others. The watercolour focuses on Snake Island, a small islet off the northern coast at the western outskirts of Kyrenia. The place was frequented by the Nicosia tribe for swimming and took its name from the snakes once found there. The sandy beach, as well as its closeness to the shore, made it very popular. Presently, it has been joined to the shore by a road.
