From the top of a mountain (Agia Irini Bay, Morphou)

Creator:

Anonymous

Date:

ca. 1879

Description:

The bay of Ayia Irini in the district of Morphou is famous for its Mediterranean forest, the indigenous tulips and the excavations by the Swedish expedition in 1927-31. The watercolour is much earlier and is a result of the artist’s interest in the topographical formations and, most important, his/her aspiration to show the proximity of the island to the shores of Turkey, clearly visible in the horizon on a clear day.
